WHY WORK WITH DOGS
The UK dog market is vibrant and it’s no surprise to those of us who have operated in it for many years. We see it. We feel it. We’re excited by it. Now recent research by Mintel has confirmed it. It seems 10% of the 10 million dogs, living in the UK, were walked by a dog walker in 2018, and Mintel have predicted a 25% rise in that number by year 2023.
As a nation, we love our dogs. The UK pet market is one of the largest in Europe, worth over £7 billion. That statistic alone presents a compelling argument for opportunity. But there’s more.
“The pet food and pet care industry is growing well, underpinned by stable pet ownership and an increasing desire to treat pets with premium food, products and services as they become a more integral part of the family,” says Chana Baran, a retail analyst at Mintel. “Additionally, with pet ownership peaking among full-time workers, there is an opportunity to provide practical services such as dog walking and daycare.”
Research from Mintel in 2018 suggests that the continued growth of the service sector for pets shows no signs of abating, with 51% of pet owners saying they would rather cut back spending money on themselves than on their pets. Millennials in particular, (these are people born in the early 80’s to mid 90’s) are a rising sector of the market, with many ‘pet influencers’ on social media. The majority do not see hiring a dog walker as a luxury, but a necessity.
